Chelsea ridiculed by top source after double boost – ‘they’ve thrown it away’
Chelsea have secured a double boost at the end of the 2024-25 campaign – securing last-gasp Champions League qualification on Sunday before winning the Uefa Conference League days later.
The Blues beat Nottingham Forest to confirm a fourth-place Premier League finish on the final day (25 May) before dispatching Real Betis in Wroclaw to win Europe’s third-tier trophy.
It is Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital’s first silverware since taking charge of the club in a US-backed takeover three years ago.
Chelsea have since spent £2billion on players and have showed no signs of stopping their outrageous transfer policy despite the threat of Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR).
Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – has ridiculed the Blues despite two big achievements in recent days.
Chelsea slammed for £2bn transfer spend
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness insisted Chelsea could have achieved the same feats by spending £1billion – or even less – on transfers in the same time frame.
The Blues have twice smashed the British transfer record in recent years to complete deals for Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez.
Wyness admitted Chelsea’s recent achievements will make a “huge difference” for the club commercially – after they failed to secure a front-of-shirt sponsor for most of the season as interested parties did not meet their valuation.

He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “Champions League qualification will give them a big boost, as will the Conference League win.
“It will help them commercially, but I come back to the £2billion number they have spent on players.
“Why only spend £1billion when double that can get you to exactly the same place?
“You may as well show you’ve got it by throwing it away, I guess.
“I really believe Chelsea could have achieved this by spending half the money, if not less.
“Anyway, that’s another story. Champions League will make a huge difference for them in terms of sponsors and bonuses on the commercial side.”

Chelsea get Leao boost this summer
Meanwhile, Football Insider has revealed (29 May) that Chelsea are set for a boost in their long-term pursuit of AC Milan star Rafael Leao this summer.
The Blues are again on the hunt for a new left-sided winger this summer with the club unlikely to go through with their purchase of loan star Jadon Sancho.
Sources say they could have a “window of opportunity” to sign Leao with Milan failing to qualify for any kind of European football for the 2025-26 campaign.
