Injury expert: Pulisic hit by 'multiple' setbacks at Chelsea

Christian Pulisic has suffered “multiple” setbacks throughout his latest two months on the sidelines at Chelsea.

So says injury expert Ben Dinnery, who runs the Premier Injuries site and has a background in medicine and data analysis.

Tonight’s (2 October) meeting with Malmo represents Pulisic’s first opportunity for first-team football since the opening day of the season.

Speaking to Chelsea’s media team yesterday, Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel confirmed the wide forward is “back in the squad” for the Champions League clash.

The 23-year-old has been suffering from an ankle injury which is the latest in a long line of problems since his arrival in London in 2019.

And Dinnery explains that the United States international has struggled with a string of setbacks in the last two months alone.

He told Football Insider correspondent Adam Williams: “First of all, we know Thomas Tuchel and his staff are meticulous.

“He won’t throw players in if they aren’t ready to come through that battle, which is a good characteristic.

“We know that Pulisic has suffered multiple minor problems in this recovery period.

“His original timeline was only about to 10 to 12 days. He will be involved in tonight’s squad which means he’ll have been out for just short of two months.

“That gives you a little bit of an insight into what’s been happening behind the scenes.

“On occasions, he has complained of discomfort as he’s progressed through those sport-specific recovery activities.

“In that situation, you take a step back until you can tick off that box.

“You’re never going to be 100 per cent sure that a player isn’t at risk of reinjury. But at least they are in a position to cope with the game’s demands.
