Injury expert: This is 'real reason' Mount out of Chelsea-Malmo clash tonight

The “real reason” Mason Mount will not feature for Chelsea tonight (2 November) is because he was not ready for their final training session.

So says injury expert Ben Dinnery, who runs the Premier Injuries site and has a background in medicine and data analysis.

As per BBC Sport on 1 November, Blues boss Thomas Tuchel revealed that Mount “does not feel good enough” to face Malmo in the Champions League.

The 22-year-old midfielder missed the 3-0 victory away to Newcastle United on 30 October with an unspecified illness.

Tuchel did confirm after the match, however, that Mount is not suffering from Covid as some had speculated.

Dinnery explained that Mount’s absence is more to do with his lack of preparation in training than the illness itself.

“He hasn’t been involved in training,” he told Football Insider correspondent Adam Williams,

“When all is said and done, that’s the real reason that any given player will miss a match. It’s all to do with match fitness and sharpness.

“You work with some medical departments and their decisions are based purely on whether the player has played in the final session before the game.

“If he has, he will be considered. If he hasn’t, he’s out. Mason Mount hasn’t been training, so why take the risk by bringing him in prematurely?

“With all due respect to Malmo, you would expect Chelsea to go there with a second-string and still ease past them.”
