Chelsea tipped to cash in on ‘£100m’ Romelu Lukaku after stance revealed – pundit

Chelsea overpaid for Romelu Lukaku and should cut their losses in the summer window.

That is the view of 2000 European Golden Shoe winner Kevin Phillips, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the 28-year-old’s future at Stamford Bridge.

Lukaku scored for Chelsea on Saturday in a 2-0 win over Middlesbrough in the FA Cup quarter-finals.

However, the £97.5million summer signing did not celebrate the goal and instead cut a forlorn figure at the Riverside.

A Chelsea source told Football Insider (20 February) that Lukaku is “not happy” and wants to leave just seven months after returning to London.

When asked for his assessment of Lukaku’s future, Phillips told Football Insider: “It is an interesting one.

“He started well and then his form dipped after he got injured. There has been the fallout after the interview as well. It has been far from ideal.

“On his day, he is a handful for any defence but I have my reservations. I think he’s one of those players who plays well one week and doesn’t turn up the next. He doesn’t have the consistency you’d want for a player who cost £100million.

“If there was an opportunity to get rid of him in the summer I think they would take it.”

Lukaku has contributed 12 goals and two assists in 34 appearances across all competitions this season.

His contract runs until the summer of 2026.
