Chelsea transfer update as Tottenham, Newcastle eye ‘potential star’ Acheampong

Chelsea have made a decision over selling Josh Acheampong as transfer interest in the young right-back emerges from Tottenham and Newcastle.

The 19-year-old enjoyed something of a breakthrough season with the Blues during the 2024/25 campaign, making multiple season appearances.

That included several outings in the Europa Conference League that Enzo Maresca’s side went on to win last month.

After a period of stalemate in negotiations, Acheampong signed a new contract with Chelsea in late 2024, which opened the door for him to get those senior opportunities.

Josh Acheampong wanted for Premier League transfer

Amid that breakout for the teenager in recent months, Acheampong now appears to be attracting interest from elsewhere with the summer transfer window in full flow.

According to an update from The Independent, both Tottenham and Newcastle are among the clubs interested in the Chelsea star.

There is also interest from abroad in the teenager, with Bundesliga outfit Borussia Dortmund and Italian giants Internazionale apparently also keen to sign him permanently.

However, Daily Mail journalist Kieran Gill has stated that the Blues have no plans to sell Acheampong this summer, despite inevitable interest in him given his profile.

Indeed, it is suggested that Chelsea instead see the right-back as a “potential star” who is making progress, ensuring they want him themselves for the future.

Chelsea transfer stance the right one

Football Insider Verdict

It is little surprise that there is no intent to sell Acheampong from those at Stamford Bridge at this moment in time.

Having only signed him to a new long-term contract a few months ago, it would make little sense to now for Chelsea let him move on for good, after all the work they did to secure that deal.

That would deny Maresca and his side the chance to really benefit from the talent that he possesses which can allow him make even more of an impact for the club as he develops.

If that was the case, the right-back could help the club achieve even more success in the future, before making them a bigger fee in the window when his ability makes him worth even more than he is now.

However, there have been suggestions that Chelsea could get the chance to loan out Achempong in the summer transfer window.

Given he may struggle to get ahead of Reece James and Malo Gusto in the pecking order at Stamford Bridge next season, that could be a smart move that means he is still worth watching this summer.
