Chris Sutton gives verdict on Rangers summer business, claims one signing has great pedigree
By Harvey Byrne
Outspoken football pundit and former striker Chris Sutton believes that the “jury is still out” for Pedro Caixinha after bringing a number of foreign imports to Rangers this summer.
The Gers have been busy already this summer, bringing in five players as Caixinha plans to overhaul his squad in his first transfer window at the club.
However, they have only brought in one Scottish player to date with each of the other four players who have come in of Portuguese nationality.
Now, Sutton has told that this method has worked for some clubs in the past, but it is now guaranteed.
But, he did also praise the signing of veteran centre-back Bruno Alves, who he claimed has “great pedigree.”
“Caixinha said the Dons cycle was coming to an end but it hasn’t with this news. Pedro should be concentrating on his own team anyway,” wrote Sutton in his column for the Daily Record.
“To be fair, he has brought in his own players. Bruno Alves has great pedigree and a lot of foreign players have come in. That has worked in the past for clubs but the jury is still out.
“Pedro has had a lot to say and he took on an enormously tough job with a squad of players who really underperformed under Mark Warburton.
“It was never going to be easy and he didn’t help himself with a lot of what he had to say and focusing on Aberdeen.
“After Aberdeen played Rangers off the park at Ibrox at the end of the season Pedro would I’m sure have realised it’s better to do his talking on the pitch. And this season it’s his team.
“Last season has gone and Pedro I’m sure will feel he has a much stronger hand with the players he has recruited.”
Both Alves and Ryan Jack are the two names that Rangers have signed this summer that the Ibrox crowd will know well.
However, the likes of Fabio Cardoso, Dalco and Daniel Candeias are all unknown quantities in the United Kingdom and Gers fans will be eagerly anticipating what they can bring to the table.
Caixinha himself will also be hoping his additions settle in well as he looks to return Rangers to the top of the table while also competing in the Europa League.
In other Rangers news, Tam McManus believes this striker signing will be the Gers’ best piece of business this summer.
