Chris Sutton: Rangers No 1 choice for next manager must be this 46-year-old

By Danny Wright

Chris Sutton believes that Aberdeen manager Derek McInnes must be Rangers’ No 1 choice to replace Pedro Caixinha after the Portuguese boss was sacked on Thursday.

Caixinha was shown the Ibrox exit door following an emergency meeting with Dave King and the Gers board in the morning.

Wednesday night’s 1-1 draw with Kilmarnock at home appeared to have been the final nail in the coffin of Caixinha’s time in Glasgow, however it is perhaps obvious that there were a large number of contributory factors.

The Europa League exit to minnows Progres in the summer, the 5-1 hammering to Celtic in the Old Firm and the failure to get the best out of his big-money signings have all played parts in his spell at Rangers to be known as a massive failure.

Former Celtic striker Sutton has been one of the most vocal pundits in the media to call for Caixinha to be axed by the Gers, and after getting his wish on Thursday, took to his personal Twitter account to suggest who he would appoint as replacement if he was in charge.

“Derek Mcinnes must be first choice he’s done a fantastic job at Aberdeen,” he said.

Derek McInnes has had three full seasons in charge of Aberdeen, leading the Dons to a third place and two second placed finishes behind the rampant Celtic, as well as reaching the Scottish League Cup and Scottish Cup finals last term.

The 46-year-old is a former player of Rangers and also has had success in his other job in Scotland with St Johnstone, before he had a short-lived spell south of the border with Bristol City.

In other Rangers news, Vladimir Weiss has made a surprising claim about the sacking of Caixinha.
