Chris Sutton: There are times this Celtic mainstay looks like Bambi on ice

By Harvey Byrne

Former striker Chris Sutton has responded to current Celtic goalkeeper mainstay Craig Gordon’s comments, claiming there are times that he does look like “Bambi on ice” and that his criticism is justified.

The outspoken pundit has not let his allegiance to the Hoops cloud his view of the 34-year-old stopper and he has often been critical of Gordon for his mistakes despite being the side’s number one in their recent successful history.

The former Sunderland goalkeeper himself responded by saying that he believed Sutton is trying to stick to the script that he had set early on about Gordon.

However, Sutton has now aired his voice once more, stating that he believes Gordon is making too many errors and he can’t hide from those facts.

“It’s not just me who said it. Brendan Rodgers left him (Gordon) out last year and he had to fight his way back in. But you can’t tell me that he’s been playing brilliantly, because he hasn’t,” wrote Sutton in his column for the Daily Record.

“His distribution has improved but there are times he looks like Bambi on ice and is making too many errors. Those are facts.”

Gordon joined Celtic back in the summer of 2014 after two years out of the game following a devastating run of knee injuries that risked bringing an end to his professional career.

However, since joining the Hoops he has played in a massive 173 matches in total, keeping 86 clean sheets, while conceding 132 goals.

He has also played in all 14 of Celtic’s matches in all competitions this season, keeping nine clean sheets while conceding on 12 occasions and he will now be looking to help the club lift their seventh consecutive Premiership title and his fourth while proving Sutton wrong.
