Chris Waddle: This is who reported Tottenham and Arsenal target should sign for

Former Tottenham man Chris Waddle believes that reported target Ross Barkley should sign a new deal with current club Everton.

Manager Ronald Koeman offered the 23-year-old an ultimatum in his press conference on Thursday, stating that his future must be decided in the next week with his current deal set to expire next summer.

This has been followed by a report from the Sun claiming that north London duo Tottenham and Arsenal are tracking the attacking midfielder’s situation and are waiting to pounce.

But, despite his ties to Spurs Waddle believes Barkley would be better signing a new deal with Everton where he would be guaranteed first team football, which he wouldn’t be at a top four club.

“Sign,” stated Waddle firmly on BBC 5 Live when asked what he would advise Barkley to do this summer.

“He’s playing. He’s in the team. He’s learning. He’s still young. We’ve seen young players leave Everton. [Wayne] Rooney’s had a great career, but you look at Jack Rodwell and it didn’t work out.

“If he goes to one of the big four, will he be guaranteed a shirt every week? Or does he sit on the bench, lose interest, which we’ve seen with a lot of young players.

“He’s basically guaranteed a shirt at Everton because he plays well at Everton. So stay with them. There’s no reason to leave.”

Barkley has played in 177 matches in total for Everton, returning 26 goals and 26 assists after making his debut in 2011 as a 17-year-old.

He was topped as one of England’s brightest young talents and although he has yet to fully fulfil his potential managers like Mauricio Pochettino and Arsene Wenger will believe they can get the best out of him, especially after the Argentine’s success with current star Dele Alli.
