In the statement, the Leeds chairman Andrea Radrizzani said the club had been talking to Wood over a new deal, with a release clause if they didn’t make to the Premier League, but it wasn’t enough to keep hold of him.
“For the past month we have tried to negotiate a new three year contract with Chris Wood.
“We offered the player strong financial terms including reasonable exit clauses, lower than the fee we demanded for a transfer this summer, should the club not reach the Premier League in a certain timeframe.

“However the player’s preference was to leave Leeds United and as he only had one year left on his contract after this season we had to protect the club and ensure we did not sell Chris below our valuation.”

Football Insider verdict:
This brings to an end a transfer saga where it seems everyone is keen to come out of it looking good.
It looks like Leeds did absolutely everything they could to keep hold of the player, and the statement says they’ve been in talks with Wood for a month.
However, he had set his heart on a move to the Premier League and when the offer came about from Burnley it was too good for him to turn down.
Everyone seems to be singing from the same hymn sheet and it’s been fairly amusing to see all the ‘same but different’ statements come out as soon as the new was announced.
To be fair to Wood he’s not contradicting anything the club have said and he obviously has feeling for Leeds and wants to leave on amicable terms.
That obviously might not be possible, given the way football and football fans work.
