Jackie McNamara says he would be shocked if Steven Gerrard is tempted to leave Rangers for Newcastle United amid speculation linking him with a move to the Magpies.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Scotland star said the Premier League side looks like a “club in crisis” at the moment and that Gerrard’s focus right now will be on building a team to catch Celtic at the top of the table.
National reports have seen the former Liverpool star’s name linked with a switch to St James’ Park alongside a number of other candidates, the majority young and inexperienced coaches like the Rangers man.
However, McNamara says he would be shocked if Gerrard were to leave, stating that Newcastle are a troubled side with plenty of problems off the pitch.
Asked he thought Gerrard could move to Newcastle, McNamara told Football Insider: “I’d be surprised. I think he was linked with Derby the week before if Lampard goes, which looks to be the case.
“I’d be surprised if he was to go to Newcastle just now, I think he’s got the bit between his teeth at Rangers just now, with the signings and the players he’s bringing in. He’s wanting to try and stop Celtic’s dominance which obviously is not going to be easy.
“I don’t know (if he’d be tempted). It seems a bit of a club in crisis with the fans, you’ve got the manager and the way he’s been treated. It’s been well documented the problems with Benitez’s funds to invest in the team.”
Gerrard has taken charge of 61 games as manager of Rangers, winning 32 of those and losing just 10.
Rangers finished nine points behind Celtic in the hunt for the Premiership title last season, the Hoops also sealing the Scottish League Cup and Scottish Cup to continue their dominance over Scottish football.
In other Rangers news, it can be REVEALED that a Champions League side have set their sights on signing an Ibrox ace this summer.
