Clubs ready to pounce if Rangers ‘mess around’ Calvin Bassey after record-breaking reveal – pundit
Rangers cannot “mess around” and must give Calvin Bassey a pay rise if they want to keep hold of him this summer, according to Kevin Campbell.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Arsenal and Everton forward claimed other clubs will “look after” Bassey if Rangers do not act quickly.
An Ibrox source told Football Insider last week (21 May) that the club will offer the 22-year-old a “massive” pay hike after his heroics performances this season.
The versatile defender put in impressive displays in both the Europa League final loss to Eintracht Frankfurt and the Scottish Cup final win over Hearts.
His current deal is set to expire in the summer of 2024 but a new contract will see his wages rise above the £20,000-a-week mark and into the top bracket of earners at Ibrox.
Sky Sports reported on Thursday (26 May) Steven Gerrard’s Aston Villa are one of a number of clubs interested in Bassey who Rangers value in excess of the Scottish record of £25million.
“He’s strong, can play centre-half and can play left-back and has done excellently this season,” Campbell told Football Insider assistant editor Dylan Childs.
“Listen, don’t mess around because if you mess around and don’t look after him and pay him then somebody else will.
“I think Rangers will look after him, for sure.”

Bassey moved to the Gers from Leicester City in the summer of 2020 for just £300,000.
The Nigeria international has now played 64 times across all competitions for the Ibrox giants, chipping in with six assists and a goal in the process.
