Clueless - Exclusive: Whelan rips into Leeds as he's left tearing his hair out

Noel Whelan has blasted the Leeds United players for their inability to score from set plays this season.

The former Whites striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, has questioned the desire of the squad after seeing a number of free-kicks and corners wasted despite today’s 3-1 win at Blackburn Rovers.

According to Whoscored, Leeds have netted just nine goals from set plays in the Championship this season, with Kalvin Phillips scoring direct from a free-kick at Ewood Park.

Whelan admits he has been left tearing his hair out time and again this season and has suggested a number of reasons why the Whites have been so wasteful with set plays.

Whelan told Football Insider: “We’ve had a number of set pieces – corners, we can’t score from them, that is an attacking set play and they win and lose you games.

“We have an abundance every game, every single game, we’re nearly in double figures on corners and we never convert any of them. We don’t seem to have an idea, we’re pulling balls back to the edge of the box but the balls are about 20 yards away.

“I know what they’re trying to do, which is drag the defence out of position but if they’re not willing to move, that doesn’t work. We don’t seem to have an idea. I don’t know it’s the corner itself, it’s not good enough, the delivery’s not good enough?

“Do we actually want to attack it, do we want to score a goal, do we want to put our heads in where it hurts? Those sort of set pieces win you football matches and we’re lacking in ideas.”

Phillips has regularly taken corners and free-kicks for Leeds this season, while the likes of Pablo Hernandez have also stepped up throughout the campaign.

The Whites’ next match sees them take on relegation-threatened Stoke City at Elland Road on Thursday.

In other Leeds United news, Noel Whelan has been left fuming over the “worst decision in football this season” at Elland Road.
