Clueless: Tottenham fans blast senior man as 29-year-old omitted from national team

By Harvey Byrne

Tottenham fans have blasted Belgium manager Roberto Martinez on Twitter after he elected to start Mousa Dembele on the bench for Saturday evening’s World Cup qualifier with Greece.

The former Everton manager decided to leave the 29-year-old Spurs midfield star on the substitutes bench with Manchester United’s Marouane Fellaini, Roma’s Radja Nainggolan and Tianjin Quanjian’s Axel Witsel making up the midfield three.

The Belgian side is well known in England with several Premier League stars all starting, such as Everton’s Romelu Lukaku, Chelsea’s Thibaut Courtois and former Spurs man Nacer Chadli.

Tottenham’s defensive duo Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen also started in the back line.

However, it was the omission of Dembele from the starting eleven which caught the attention of the Spurs fan base on social media.

Many supporters questioned what Martinez was thinking with his selection, while another went as far as to call the Spaniard “clueless”.

Here are a selection of their messages on Twitter:

Dembele has been a regular in the Tottenham team this season as they sit in second place in the Premier League with 28 appearances to his name in all competitions.

One bonus of the combative midfielder not playing on Saturday should mean that he will be available for next weekend’s away clash with Burnley.

In other Tottenham news, John Hartson believes Spurs youngster will grow up overnight with this responsibility.
