John Hartson: Tottenham youngster will grow up overnight with this major responsibility
By Harvey Byrne
John Hartson has claimed that Tottenham youngster Dele Alli’s aggressive nature on the football pitch would change if he was handed the England captaincy.
The 20-year-old attacking midfielder has become one of the best players in the Premier League following his £5million transfer from League One outfit MK Dons in 2015.
However, he has often come in for criticism for his lack of discipline on the field, with particular incidents against West Brom’s Claudio Yacob and Gent’s midfielder Brecht Dejaegere leaving black marks on his career.
But, Hartson believes this problematic streak of his would be solved by handing him the responsibility of captaining his national team.
“What happens is you give him (Alli) that responsibility and instantly his attitude will change,” told Hartson speaking on Saturday evening’s BBC 606 show.

“He will feel that responsibility. He’s responsible he’s England captain and do you know what he will grow up overnight and become one the senior players irrespective of his game.”

Alli has more than paid back the fee Tottenham paid to sign him with a return of 27 goals and 19 assists in 85 outings for the club.
In his debut season he was named the PFA Young Player of the Year while also being named in the Premier League PFA Team of the Year.
He has also already earned 16 caps for England and now fans from both club and country will be hoping he avoids any further suspensions.
Alli is likely to play for the Three Lions again on Sunday for the World Cup qualifying clash against Lithuania and Spurs fans will be hoping he leaves the pitch unscathed with Burnley at Turf Moor coming up next on Saturday.
