Stan Collymore has said that Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino should make Old Trafford his next stop, before making his dream move to Real Madrid.
The outspoken pundit claims that Man United is the next logical move for Pochettino and claims he should keep an eye on Jose Mourinho’s situatin over the next year and a half.
He claims that Pochettino – who has hinted at a future move to the Bernabeu – should use United as a stepping stone to the Spanish giants and should spend “four or five years” developing as a manager.
“Now, before Tottenham supporters get up in arms and say I’m trying to move their manager on, I’ll tell them this: I love what your club is doing, I’ve said it so many times,” Collymore wrote in his column in the Daily Mirror.
“But if anyone thinks Poch should stay at Spurs just because of what they are building and not want to one day to manage Real Madrid or even United, then I’m sorry, you just don’t understand football.
“Because the game isn’t just about finishing third, fourth or fifth and being a great team to watch – you have to be winning trophies.
“United would give him the budget to go toe-to-toe with anyone as well, which is something he’ll never get at Spurs.
“I could see him winning the Premier League at Old Trafford and doing very well in the Champions League, too.”
OPINION
Stan Collymore loves saying things that will get him headlines and this is the latest sensationalism from the popular pundit. Pochettino has a real affinity with Tottenham and is building a long-term project there. Man United have signed Jose Mourinho on a long-term contract extension and there’s absolutely nothing to suggest that Pochettino would move to a Premier League rival at any point in the future. Could he move straight to Real Madrid? That all depends on hos his project goes at Spurs. He needs to win something and his best shot at the moment is the FA Cup, despite two wobbles against lower league opposition.
