Confirmed: Everton 24-year-old set for Goodison exit

By Danny Wright

Everton have confirmed that Conor McAleny will leave the club at the end of his contract later this month.

A statement on the Toffees’ official club website said that the 24-year-old, along with Arouna Kone, will be released from the Merseyside outfit.

The announcement also asserted that eight members of the Under-23 squad will also be leaving the Premier League side when their contracts expire.

Jack Bainbridge, Delial Brewster, Michael Donohue, Tyrone Duffus, Russell Griffiths, Connor Hunt, Josef Yarney and James Yates will all be released at the end of June.

McAleny made just three senior appearances for Everton and has been sent on six different loan spells during his development on Merseyside.

The striker’s last first-team venture came when he started against Russian outfit Krasnodar in the Europa League group stages in 2014.

His two other Toffees outings came in back-to-back league fixtures with Arsenal and Norwich back in December 2011.

McAleny has since been sent on loan to Scunthorpe, Brentford, Cardiff, Charlton, Wigan and most recently Oxford United.

He spent the second half the season on loan with the U’s, scoring ten goals in 18 League One fixtures.

McAleny netted two hat-tricks during his stay at the Kassam against both Chesterfield and Bury.

Football Insider Verdict

It’s very likely that McAleny will be able to find a new club very soon after his stunning displays with Oxford this season. The U’s should try to sign him up now that he will be available for free and he could spearhead their attack as they look to earn promotion from League One. McAleny clearly didn’t have a future at Goodison Park. He broke his leg in 2013 that was perhaps what hindered his progress so much having made his Everton debut while still a teenager. As for Kone, it will be a lot harder for him to find a new employer. He is the wrong side of 30 and his career has been hampered by injury as of late. A move down a tier, or even abroad, could be the next step for him.
