Centre-back Connor Goldson has also been absent with an injury, with 18-year-old Leon King filling in for the Ibrox veteran.
When asked how much of the Gers’ problems this season have been down to injuries, McAvennie told Football Insider: “Not a lot.
“They miss Goldson and they have had to put two young players in there. I can understand why. I am a great believer that if you are good enough they will put you in, it does not matter how old you are.
“But they are going to make mistakes. But they also let two of their best players leave last year and they never replaced them.”
