Conte doesn't trust 'unreliable' Sessegnon after latest Tottenham development - pundit

Antonio Conte does not trust Ryan Sessegnon to perform for Tottenham, according to Danny Mills.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Leeds United and England full-back claimed Conte may see Sessegnon as “unreliable” and that’s why Matt Doherty started at left wing-back as Spurs lost 1-0 to Chelsea in the Carabao Cup semi-final second-leg last night (12 January).

Doherty started both legs of the 3-0 aggregate defeat on the left with Sessegnon on the bench.

The 21-year-old replaced the Irishman with 25 minutes to go last night to make his sixth appearance under Conte.

Sessegnon was signed by Jose Mourinho in the summer of 2019 by Mauricio Pochettino but has failed to make a regular impact on the first team.

“It’s easier as a right-back to play on the left than it used to be,” Mills told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.

“Back when I was playing you had to be quite confident on your left foot because you were booting it to the front man with 30 or 40-yard passes or into the channels.

“Nowadays you get a lot more time on the ball and have time to bring it onto your right foot and teams want to play inside.

“It’s a little bit awkward but easier than it was. It’s easier to play instinctively on your weak foot than when you’ve got a bit of time.

“Conte may see Sessegnon as unreliable doesn’t trust him and is not prepared to put him in there for that big game.

“It will be what he sees in training. 90 minutes is a snapshot of what the manager sees.

“The manager sees every little detail in training, punctuality, ability, professionalism, trust. That’s where you earn the right to start a game.”
