Conte 'following in footsteps of Arsenal' as Tottenham link with Pickford reported - pundit

Tottenham have plenty of options as they look to replace Hugo Lloris with a British goalkeeper, according to Noel Whelan.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted a move for Jordan Pickford would be “positive and clever”.

According to the Telegraph (November 18th), Pickford, 27, has reportedly been lined up by new Tottenham boss Antonio Conte as a potential successor for Lloris – who is out of contract at the end of the summer.

The 34-year-old France international has started every Spurs game this season.

Whelan claimed a deal for Pickford may have to wait until the end of the season.

“Bringing in England’s number one goalkeeper will always be a positive and clever move,” Whelan told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury.

“Whether Everton will allow him to leave is another matter, he’s under contract.

“I’m sure there are other options out there for Tottenham if Conte wants to follow in the footsteps of Arsenal and bring in an English keeper. Dean Henderson and Sam Johnstone are available.

“Lloris is going to play until the end of the season. Pickford is not going to break into that side ahead of him right now.

“Maybe it’s a deal that we will see at the end of the season rather than during January – unless they can get one of those young, up-and-coming keepers.

They will be able to work alongside and learn from Lloris between now and the end of the season.”

Pickford has two-and-a-half years to run on his contract at Goodison Park.

The shot-stopper started every game for England at Euro 2020 as the Three Lions reached the final.
