Conte set for 'punishment' after 'embarrassing' Tottenham development - pundit

Antonio Conte will find managing Tottenham in the Europa Conference League like a “punishment”, according to Gabby Agbonlahor.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Aston Villa and England attacker insisted Conte’s arrival gives Tottenham a real chance of breaking back into the top-four.

The Italian is set to oversee his first game in charge of his new club against Vitesse on Thursday night.

A Tottenham source told Football Insider (November 3) that the squad are really enjoying life under Conte after his first training sessions.

It looks like Conte will line up Spurs in his trademark 3-5-2 formation.

Asked where Spurs can go under the 52-year-old, Agbonlahor told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley: “They’ve got to be looking at the top-four.

“They’re only five points off it, it’s like it’s 10 or 15, it’s early days. That’s why I think Spurs have made the change now. They thought to themselves ‘There’s no point waiting for three or four more games, let’s do it now, let’s get this man’.

“Spurs want to be in the Champions League, Arsenal want to be in the Champions League. These are big clubs.

“They don’t want to be in the embarrassing Europa Conference League. It’s an embarrassment to be in that competition. It’s like a punishment.

“For me, they’ve got to look at the top four, 100 per cent. Conte will because he won’t want to manage in the Europa League or Europa Conference League, he’ll want to manage in the Champions League.”
