Craig Levein reacts to Celtic thrashing by PSG, makes worrying claim

Hearts boss Craig Levein has revealed that Paris Saint-Germain were “miles too good” for Celtic during Tuesday’s Champions League and made the worrying claim the “gap is growing” between the clubs.

Brendan Rodgers’ side faced a hammering at Celtic Park earlier in the week after Kylian Mbappe, Edison Cavani and Neymar found the back of the net as well as Hoops defender Mikael Lustig who scored an own goal.

Although the Bhoys have dominated the Premiership so far this season, the Hearts boss revealed that he wasn’t surprised by the heavy defeat.

“Celtic played maybe the best team in the world, maybe the favourites for the Champions League,” Levein said, as quoted by the Scottish Sun.

“That’s not something they face often and I’m sure Brendan would say the more often they play against teams like that the more comfortable they will feel in that environment.

“So was I surprised at what happened? No. Just because of the quality of the team they were playing.

“But it sounded like PSG were miles too good for them. And I think the gap is growing.”

Celtic faced Levein’s side during the opening weekend of the Premiership and the Hoops secured a 4-1 win over Hearts thanks to goals from Leigh Griffiths, last season’s Player of the Year Scott Sinclair and Callum McGregor.

While Rodgers’ squad remains unbeaten in the Scottish top flight and sit at the summit of the table, Hearts are currently sat in eighth position.

Celtic host Ross County on Saturday as Craig Levein and his team head to the SuperSeal stadium to face Hamilton.

Hearts will next face the domestic treble champions later in the year on the December 16 in their second Premiership meeting.
