Rangers striker Jason Cummings believes team-mate Alfredo Morelos had the “last laugh” by scoring twice in the 6-1 win over Ayr United after somehow managing to miss an open goal with the Gers trailing 1-0.
The Gers star scooped the ball over the bar from a yard out when Greg Docherty’s pass bobbled on the poor Somerset Park pitch causing Morelos to somehow fire over.
Morelos went on to grab the equaliser when he rifled a deft half-volley high beyond Jack Ruddy in the Ayr goal before hitting a second after the break.
Cummings admits he’s missed similar chances but said it “takes character” to brush it off and score twice in the same game.
“I’ve been there. I’ve missed ones similar to that in my career,” Cummings said, as quoted by BT Sport.
“It takes character to score two more goals after that. A lot of players would go in their shell.
“The fans were getting on their backs. But he’s responded with two good goals.
“He got the last laugh.”
Cummings also got on the scoresheet against the League One high-flyers when his sensational hooked volley gave the Light Blues the lead for first time before a double from Josh Windass and Jamie Murphy goal rounded off the comprehensive win.
Morelos has scored 15 times in 30 games for the Ibrox giants since arriving in a £1million move from HJK Helsinki last summer and is the top goalscorer in the Scottish Premiership so far this season.
The 21-year-old attracted bids from Chinese Super League side Beiing Renhe in January but couldn’t meet Rangers’ valuation of the prolific striker.
In other Rangers news, Stan Collymore has made a brutally honest admission about the Gers and bitter rivals Celtic.
