‘Cyriel Dessers is on his way’ – Russell Martin triggers Rangers overhaul

Rangers are undergoing massive change, with the completion of the long-awaited takeover triggering managerial and transfer upheaval.

Andrew Cavenagh and the 49ers Enterprise finally gained control of the club at the end of last month (30 May), after their purchase was approved by the Scottish FA.

Six days later (5 June), it was confirmed that Russell Martin would be taking over as Rangers manager, in what is his first role since being sacked by Southampton.

It has been all change inside the boardroom as well, with the Bears confirming the appointment of five new directors.

Aberdeen’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Pittodrie between 2000 and 2004, had lengthy spells as the chief of Everton and Aston Villa and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – believes that the changes have left the club with a number of issues that need ironing out.

‘Big issues in the Rangers squad’, says Wyness

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness was less than complimentary about the current Rangers squad.

The Gers finished 17 points behind arch rivals Celtic last season in the Scottish Premiership, with a lot of work needed to close that gap ahead of the new campaign.

Wyness explained that Martin has a number of “big issues” that he will have to sort out, during his first few weeks at Ibrox.

He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “He’s got a lot on his plate at Rangers right now.

How does he first of all relate to his new bosses? He’s got to get to know some of the people above him, he’s got to manage up and that’s going to be one of his first priorities.

“He’s got to look at the squad. He’s got some big issues around the squad.

If Cyriel Dessers is going to go, which is the whisper I am hearing, he’s got to look at young talent.

He’s got to look at the resources that he has to spend from the 49ers and where he can shop.”

Rangers eye sensational Eriksen move

Rangers are considering a sensational move to sign Christian Eriksen on a free transfer ahead of his imminent departure from Manchester United.

That is according to former Man United chief scout and Sir Alex Ferguson number two Mick Brown, who claims that the 33-year-old could be on his way to Glasgow.

His wages are also believed to be an issue, but if a compromise can be found and the club are willing to take a risk, it is a deal they have considered.
