Dan Ashworth set for new role at Man United – ‘more than just recruitment’

Dan Ashworth is set to have full creative license at Man United – unlike his role at Newcastle United, sources have told Football Insider.

Speaking to the new edition of Football Insider’s Insider Track Podcast, transfer correspondent Pete O’Rourke revealed that United’s expected new sporting director is about “more than just recruitment”.

Ashworth has built an impressive reputation at his former sides Newcastle and Brighton by transforming their academies, changing the structure of the clubs and the nature of their scouting networks.

It is believed that he will have more autonomy in terms of recruitment with the Red Devils compared to his role at St James’ Park, with new shareholder Sir Jim Ratcliffe giving him significant power amid the swathe of backroom changes.

Can Dan Ashworth help bring Man United back to their former glory with his new powers at the club?

The 52-year-old is yet to officially join Man United from Newcastle United, but sources have told Football Insider (14 February) that he has already agreed terms to move to Old Trafford ahead of an official approach that is expected to seal the deal.

Ratcliffe, who has full control of football operations, is overseeing a behind-the-scenes overhaul at the Premier League giants.

Ashworth is expected to join following the appointment of highly-regarded former Man City chief Omar Berrada, who became the club’s new chief executive last month.

Sources have also told Football Insider (16 February) that Ashworth and Ratcliffe do not see current manager Erik ten Hag as an appropriate long-term option, but he is unlikely to be sacked this season.

Man United

Man United are sixth in the Premier League table following three consecutive victories – most recently their 2-1 win against Aston Villa on Sunday (11 February).

They will next play Luton Town at Kenilworth Road on Sunday afternoon (18 February).
