‘Dan Burn injury update ahead of Liverpool final after Newcastle blow v Birmingham’

Dan Burn has given Newcastle United an injury scare in the lead-up to their Carabao Cup final clash with Liverpool.

Newcastle booked their place in the League Cup final with a dominant win over Arsenal in the second-leg of their semi-final on Wednesday night (5 February).

The Magpies will be hoping to end their long wait for a trophy when they make the trip to Wembley for the final on Sunday 16 March.

They will face Liverpool after they swept aside Tottenham in equally emphatic style on Thursday (6 February), although the Magpies are now facing a big concern ahead of that game.

Dan Burn limps off with groin issue in FA Cup

On Saturday (8 February), Eddie Howe‘s side returned to action with a trip to St Andrew’s to face League One leaders Birmingham City in the fourth round of the FA Cup.

After a frantic first half ended 2-2, with Newcastle controversially equalising after Birmingham had taken the lead inside a minute, the Magpies were given a major scare by Burn.

The defender limped off ten minutes half-time, and the Magpies may now have reason to be considerably worried about his availability for that final after the latest update on Burn.

Posting on X about the Newcastle defender’s departure from the match, Daily Mail journalist Craig Hope wrote:

“It looked like Dan Burn said “groin” as he came off. Everything is framed in context of cup final now, which is five weeks away…”

Football Insider Verdict

As was noted in this update, everything for the Magpies will be focused around that cup final with Liverpool, given what is at stake in that game.

If Burn has indeed injured his groin, then there is a chance that the 32-year-old could face a significant spell on the sidelines.

Newcastle
Newcastle will want Dan Burn back quickly to face Liverpool.

Initially, that will be a concern for Howe given it may mean he is unable to call on a player who has made some key contributions again this season, with Burn impressing for Newcastle this term.

Beyond that, it will also ensure the Magpies do not have as much scope to rotate other individuals between now and the cup final.

That will add to the workload of other Newcastle players which is going to be an issue they would rather avoid given they will want everyone as fresh as possible for that clash with Liverpool.

As a result, everyone connected with the club will be desperately hoping for more positive news as the situation around Burn develops.
