‘Daniel Levy is ready to spend’ after Tottenham club-record bid shock

Tottenham brought three new faces into the first-team squad in January after their injury struggles in recent months.

Antonin Kinsky, Mathys Tel and Kevin Danso all joined Spurs to bolster Ange Postecoglou’s squad before the 3 February deadline.

Postecoglou’s side sit 14th in the Premier League table and were dumped out of the League Cup at the semi-final stage by Liverpool on Thursday (6 February).

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – has had his say on why Tottenham fans will be “angry” now the dust has settled from the January window.

‘Tottenham fans are going to be angry’ after transfer latest

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness hit out at Tottenham’s late £70million bid for Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi.

Palace rejected the bid for their captain, who will have 12 months remaining on his deal at Selhurst Park in June.

Wyness insisted Tottenham fans will hold Levy to spending the promised funds in the off-season after the Spurs chairman showed his hand in January with what was a club-record bid, more than the £60m+ fees paid for Dominic Solanke and Tanguy Ndombele.

He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “Spurs fans are going to be angry that there is £70million behind the sofa when you look at the problems.

“They’ve been drifting down the table.

“It’s frustrating, but it’s a sign Levy is now ready to spend. January was never the right time to do it.

“Spurs fans will be holding him to this in the summer.

“They will want Ange to have a real refreshing and supporting of the squad.

“They’ve seen what injuries can do to them. We may just see Tottenham do very well next year if they get it right.”

Liverpool set to join Tottenham in Guehi race

Football Insider revealed on 4 February that Liverpool, Arsenal and Newcastle are among the sides set to battle it out for Guehi’s signature.

All three sides look set to secure European qualification this term, a factor which could impact Tottenham’s ability to lure the England star.

Guehi has started all 28 games for Crystal Palace this term and is now an established England international after breaking into the side at the European Championships in 2024.
