Danny Rohl’s stance on taking over at Rangers revealed after Russell Martin sack

Russell Martin was sacked by Rangers on Sunday 5 October after a disaster start to the season less than five months after his appointment.

Rangers drew 1-1 with Falkirk away from home, meaning the Gers have now won just one of their seven league games so far this season and sit in eighth place.

After weeks of building pressure on his position, the decision was made to part ways with Martin, and the search for his replacement has already begun.

Football Insider revealed on 21 September that Rangers have started assessing alternatives to Martin with a number of candidates believed to be keen on the position.

One manager who has now emerged as an outstanding candidate is former Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Rohl, who was also on Rangers’ radar during the summer.

Danny Rohl open to taking Rangers job

Former Man United chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider in May that Rohl was interested in the Rangers job as he prepared to quit Sheffield Wednesday.

The former scout, who has a wealth of experience working closely alongside elite-level managers, including the likes of Sir Alex Ferguson, exclusively told Football Insider that Rohl would still be open to replacing Martin at Ibrox.

While he is one of a number of contenders for the vacant position, Brown explained that the former Hillsborough boss is very highly-rated by the Rangers hierarchy.

Rohl has a very good reputation and he’s highly rated at Rangers,” he told Football Insider.

“He could see what was happening at Sheffield Wednesday and got out of it before he could become part of the issues there, and you can’t blame him for that.

“He’s a good manager and did a very good job with them before all the issues came up, and that’s why he’s been looked at by a few clubs.

“It surprised me when Rangers went with Martin to begin with, I’m not sure it was set up for him to succeed there, but I don’t like to see anybody get sacked.

“Rohl has a good reputation, everybody who’s worked with him speaks highly of him.

“So I’m sure he’s going to be one Rangers look at again, and if that opportunity comes up I hear it’s something he would be open to.

“Especially since he’s out of a the job at the moment, the chance to go into a big job like Rangers would appeal to anybody, even given the situation they’re in.”

Another positive for the former Wednesday boss should he take the job, is that Rohl is a big fan of Djeidi Gassama, who has enjoyed a strong start to his Rangers career.

Rohl joins four-man managerial shortlist at Rangers

Football Insider revealed on 6 October that Rangers are assessing four options to replace Martin at Ibrox after their terrible start to the season.

Alongisde Rohl, Steven Gerrard, Sean Dyche and Kevin Muscat are believed to be the leading contenders to be appointed having also been in the running during the summer.

This comes after Brown told Football Insider on 30 September that Gerrard is a leading candidate for Rangers with a sensational return to Ibrox on the cards.

The boss’ previous spell came between 2018 and 2021, when he helped Rangers lift the SPFL title, and he remains well-liked around the club and by the fans.

After leaving Saudi Pro League outfit Al Ettifaq in January, Gerrard is open to a return to work and is being assessed as one of the top options at Ibrox.
