Darren Bent insists that Wednesday’s 2-0 win over Manchester United was Sokratis’ best performance in an Arsenal shirt.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, the former Tottenham and England striker, who is a boyhood fan of the Gunners, says that the Greek international blew him away with his display against Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men.
The 31-year-old played a key role at both ends of the pitch, keeping the likes of Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial quiet while also scoring his side’s second goal.
Bent admits that he has been nervous to see the powerhouse defender among the starting XI in the past but that Wednesday’s performance blew him away.
Asked if it was the best he had seen from Sokratis at Arsenal, Bent told Football Insider: “Oh absolutely. Sometimes you look at him and you think: ‘Oh god, here we go again,’ but that was a different player out there.
“When Arsenal play a back four, I think Mikel Arteta’s got it right, he gave them some protection, he got it spot on. He’s said to Torreira and Xhaka: ‘You two, do not move from in front of that back four.”
Sokratis has been a regular member of the Arsenal squad this season, with a total of 20 appearances under his belt across all competitions.
He had played every minute of the Gunners’ first 11 Premier League games but has since found himself in and out the side.
Arteta handed the former Borussia Dortmund defender a start in his first game in charge against Bournemouth but left him out the matchday squad completely versus Chelsea.
In other Arsenal news, Darren Bent claims a rival statement was a “real slap in the face” for the Gunners.
