Darwin Nunez cited as Jurgen Klopp tipped to green light 'exciting' Liverpool raid - pundit

Noel Whelan has tipped Jurgen Klopp to green light a move for Liverpool to sign a new striker this summer.

The former Leeds forward, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested the Reds may look to recruit an “out and out” centre forward to offer something different in attack.

A Liverpool source told Football Insider in February the club have kept close tabs on Benfica’s 22-year-old hitman Darwin Nunez with a view to a summer move.

The Portuguese outfit value the Uruguay international at around £55million after his outstanding season.

Having seen the likes of Sadio Mane and Diogo Jota waste big chances in recent games, Whelan suggested Klopp may sanction a move for someone like Nunez ahead of the summer.

Whelan told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “They’re very much like a Man City. That front three are very versatile.

“They can adapt, they can all play through the middle at times. Their interchanging is fantastic to watch, they confuse defences with their runs and their movement.

“I just think they need to be more clinical. It’s no different to Manchester City as well. They got the job done but the fact is it could have been four or five against Villareal, no doubt about that.

“It’s that patient game, the first goal is crucial and that has showed. It was just relentless attack, attack, attack from Liverpool. It’s about getting the job done.

“It’s like that Man City one isn’t it? They’ve realised that they do need that out and out centre-forward. It might be something that Jugen Klopp’s looking into.

“We might see certain players come into the football club who are that out and out striker. Benfica’s Nunez is wanted by quite a few. I expect some exciting activity at Liverpool come the summer.”

Nunez has scored 33 goals in 39 appearances across all competitions for Benfica this season.
