David Moyes to make sensational West Ham comeback? Expert reacts

West Ham need to give current boss Julen Lopetegui a chance amid ‘disrespectful’ talks of a sensational return for David Moyes.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former Hammers striker Frank McAvennie admits Moyes, 61, would likely be doing a better job defensively. However, he believes the 58-year-old Spaniard deserves the chance to turn things around at the club.

Lopetegui took over from Moyes at the end of last season but has struggled to get the team firing on all cylinders, despite a significant investment of £121.6million during the summer transfer window.

A heavy 4-1 defeat to London rivals Tottenham has left the club in 15th with just eight points from their opening eight Premier League games.

West Ham urged to keep the faith in Julen Lopetegui

Moyes has previously returned to West Ham, stepping in for Manuel Pellegrini midway through the 2019-20 season, and later leading the club to their first-ever major European trophy in the 2022-23 campaign.

Ultimately, fan frustration with Moyes’ style of play played a significant role in his dismissal, but many are now realising that the grass isn’t always greener on the other side.

“You’ve got to give them time”, McAvennie told Football Insider.

“I liked David Moyes, everyone liked David, but they wanted him to let the players off the reigns a little bit.

“We’ve not got a decent back four but they look so disorganised and that’s something David would have sorted.

“People are now talking about David coming back, now that would be bigger than Jesus coming back.

“He’s been back before but I think it’s disrespectful, the manager has only been in there a short period of time but he’s got to turn it around quickly.
