Tottenham are confident of finalising a new contract for Jan Vertonghen after Mauricio Pochettino agreed a new five-year deal, Football Insider sources understand.

Spurs are in advanced talks with the Belgium international about an improved deal as they work on a round of contracts for their key players.

They have not yet put pen to paper on a contract for Pochettino but the manager announced last Friday that he will extend his deal until 2021.

This has provided reassurances to the senior players, who were waiting on Pochettino sorting his future before formally committing to their own extensions.

A source close to the Tottenham boardroom has told Football Insider that the club are increasingly hopeful a new deal for Vertonghen will be signed before the summer.

The 29-year-old made his comeback last month after two-and-a-half months out with knee ligament damage and slotted in seamlessly alongside Toby Alderweireld in the centre of defence.

Manager Mauricio Pochettino said it was an “easy” decision to reinstate the Belgian even though Kevin Wimmer had deputised impressively for 15 matches.

Vertonghen’s deal expires in the summer of 2018, but Spurs want to extend the deal until 2020 and lift his salary to around £75,000-a-week in a package worth a total of £17.5million.

As reported by Football Insider, in addition to Vertonghen, the likes of Christian Eriksen, Harry Kane, Erik Lamela and Hugo Lloris are also in line for need deals this summer.

Spurs have previously cashed in on their prized assets, such as Dimitar Berbatov, Luka Modric and Gareth Bale, but Pochettino wants to keep the current squad together and develop a youthful and hugely promising group of players.

Other than simply keeping the squad together for Pochettino, Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy is well aware that the senior stars will be more valuable if they are tied to longer contracts.

In other Tottenham news, it has been reported that Bayern Munich have a “crush” on a 22-year-old Spurs ace.
