'Dean Smith is fighting for his life' after Aston Villa update today

Dean Smith is “fighting for his life” at Aston Villa, according to Gabby Agbonlahor.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Aston Villa’s record Premier League goalscorer issued his full support of Smith but admitted he has to get a result against Southampton on Friday night.

An Aston Villa source told Football Insider (October 22) the manager is under “huge” pressure at his boyhood club.

The 4-1 hammering by West Ham at the weekend was Villa’s fourth consecutive Premier League defeat.

The Athletic reported today (November 3) that defeat to Southampton would prompt a review period during the international break.

“He’s fighting for his life at Aston Villa at the moment.

“You look at Nuno getting the sack and Tottenham are five points ahead of Villa. With the money Villa have spent over the last two seasons, any manager would be nervous.

“I do feel that Dean Smith has got time in the bank for Aston Villa because of what he’s done for the club, he’s brought them up. You’re not going to just sack him when you have a few bad results.

“If there is ever a time to worry, it’s the game before an international break. It’s Friday night, under the lights, it’s a game where Aston Villa need at least a point. They want to win but they need at least a point.

“If they lost and put in a poor performance again you start to feel very nervous for Dean Smith.

“Hopefully they keep hold of Dean Smith because I feel once they get that right team, he can still get good results.”
