Declan Rice reacts to Anthony Gordon after Newcastle deal Arsenal transfer blow

Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon has taken to social media to reflect on what has been a hugely successful campaign for the club.

Earlier this year, the Magpies ended their long wait for a major trophy by beating Liverpool in the League Cup final at Wembley.

They then followed that up by qualifying for the Champions League on the final day on Sunday (25 May), amid Aston Villa’s controversial defeat to Man United.

Gordon missed the League Cup final win for Newcastle due to suspension, and has found it hard to get back in the team since then.

Even so, that success means it now appears more likely he will stay at St James’ Park this summer.

Anthony Gordon reflects on historic campaign

There was speculation earlier this season around the future of the winger, with Arsenal identified as holding an interest in Gordon.

Ahead of the final day though, Football Insider reported that Arsenal would struggle to sign the Newcastle star, if his side qualified for the Champions League.

With Eddie Howe‘s team having done that, a deal to take the 24-year-old to the Emirates this summer therefore now looks unlikely.

Posting on Instagram on Tuesday (27 May) to give his take on how things have gone for his side this season, Gordon wrote: “Achieved everything we set out and still got so much more to give.

“Thank you Mags for all the support in the ups and the downs. Looking forward to next season.”

In response, Arsenal midfielder Declan Rice was among those to show his support by liking the post in spite of the setback this may have dealt to his own team’s transfer plans.

Football Insider Verdict

There will be plenty connected with the Magpies who are going to be pleased with how things have played out here with regards to Gordon’s future.

While things may not exactly have worked out for him in recent months, the winger has still shown himself to possess the ability to be a quality asset for Newcastle.

He is therefore going to have an important role to play with his attacking threat as they look to compete on even more fronts next season with their return to the Champions League.

Indeed, keeping him also gives Howe more depth to work with as he attempts to manage his squad through what will be a hectic campaign.

As a result, this looks to be yet another benefit for Newcastle of the productive campaign they have enjoyed.
