Dedryck Boyata believes Celtic sensation has the qualities to play in the Premier League

By Amir Mir

Dedryck Boyata believes Celtic sensation Patrick Roberts has the qualities to succeed in the English Premier League.

The 20-year-old is on loan at Parkhead from Manchester City, with his current deal set to expire in the summer.

Roberts moved to Glasgow in January 2016 where his direct style and ability to beat players became an instant hit with supporters.

Centre-back Boyata was also on the books at City as a youngster as he found it tough to earn game time at the Manchester club before moving to Celtic.

The Belgium is aware of how tough it is to break through at the Etihad Stadium but he believes Roberts can succeed at the highest level.

“He deserves to play at the biggest level in the world,” said Boyata, as quoted by the Daily Record. “I’ve been at Manchester City, I know how difficult it is to get your chances when you’re a young player

“But you don’t know what’s going to happen until you get there.

“For Patrick, I can only hope the best for him there. He knows it’s not going to be easy but he will give the best he can and everybody here knows his qualities.”

Roberts came through the ranks at Championship club Fulham before making his move to Manchester City in 2015 for a fee of £12million.

The highly-rated youngster has only made three appearances for his parent club but has featured more regularly during his time in Glasgow.

Over the course of the season, the England under-20 international has played 43 games in all competitions, scoring nine goals added with 17 assists.

In the Scottish Premiership, he has scored seven goals and provided 12 assists during his 29 games for Brendan Rodgers.

Roberts scored a brace for his side as they beat St Johnstone 4-1 on home soil on Saturday afternoon as Rodgers’ team extended their unbeaten run in Scotland.
