Defoe may have major say on Rangers transfer policy after Ibrox source reveal – Mills

Danny Mills has suggested Jermain Defoe could play a major role in Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s Rangers transfer plan.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Premier League and England defender claimed Van Bronckhorst may lean heavily on Defoe in his early weeks in charge.

The player-coach will be part of the managerial team for this weekend’s League Cup semi-final against Hibs.

Rangers

Van Bronckhorst will then oversee his first training session the following week.

An Ibrox source told Football Insider yesterday (November 18) the new boss will have to sell players if he wants to bring in flesh blood during the January window.

“I’m sure he’ll keep Defoe around until the end of the season,” Mills told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.

“He will know he’s an experienced player and campaigner so why would you not keep him around?

“He knows the players so he can be a good foil for Van Bronckhorst to learn a thing or two about the players, transfers, to bounce ideas off. They are not dissimilar in age, realistically.

“If they can create a good dynamic then Gio van Bronckhorst can lean on him for that experience.

“It will then be about van Bronckhorst’s contacts in the game, maybe from the Dutch set-up, he might try and borrow one or two players.”

Rangers

Defoe has been limited to just eight minutes of Scottish Premiership action for Rangers this term and has struggled with injuries.

The 39-year-old is out of contract at Ibrox at the end of the current campaign.

In other news, a well-connected pundit has revealed three things he’s noticed about Van Bronckhorst during meetings.
