Delph set for extended Everton run after Benitez reveal - pundit

Gabby Agbonlahor has tipped Fabian Delph for an extended run in the Everton starting XI.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Aston Villa and England attacker insisted Delph would have been “buzzing” after making his first Premier League start in almost a year against Tottenham.

The midfielder played the first hour of Everton’s 0-0 draw with Spurs at Goodison Park at the weekend.

According to sofascore, he completed the most tackles of anyone on the pitch (3) and ended with a pass completion rate of 87 per cent.

It was his first start since he was forced off with an injury less than half an hour into the Blues’ 1-1 draw with Burnley in December 2020.

He had made two previous substitute appearances in the Premier League this term.

As quoted by the club website, Rafa Benitez praised the 31-year-old’s performance against Tottenham but admitted he was still a way off full fitness.

“It’s very difficult to come back after so long out,” Agbonlahor told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.

“It would have been good for him. He’s had his injury problems and I thought he did well. He would have been buzzing.

“In parts, I thought he controlled the game. He’s done himself no harm in keeping his position in the team and getting an extended run.

“They need someone like him in the team who can control games and that’s what he did.”

Delph has played 33 times across all competitions for Everton after signing from Man City in the summer of 2019.

The former England international’s Goodison Park contract is set to expire at the end of the season.
