Doherty tipped to save Tottenham millions as Nuno stance revealed
Matt Doherty could save Tottenham millions by rediscovering his old form from Wolves under Nuno Espirito Santo.
The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested the Lilywhites may not have to dip into the market for a new right-back if the 29-year-old gets back to his best.
Doherty played 142 times under Nuno at Wolves before he was sold to Tottenham last summer.
He endured a difficult first season in north London as he battled Serge Aurier for a starting spot.
Whelan admitted Doherty needed to show a lot more during the upcoming campaign to regain the faith of the fans.
He suggested a reunion with Nuno could get the best out the right-back.

Asked if Doherty could save Spurs millions with a return to form under Nuno, Whelan told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “Absolutely. Doherty must be licking his lips. It wasn’t a great season for him last season.
“Maybe he will feel a lot more comfortable and at home, working with a manager that he worked with for a long, long time. He can probably get the best out of him.
“This is where pre-season again is very important to go out there and impress. I don’t think anyone’s been impressed by Doherty. There’s been a lot of question marks whether he can do it at Tottenham Hotspur.
“This is probably the best scenario that could have ever happened to Matt Doherty. Getting that ex-manager in that sold him there for big money and trying to get that extra little bit out of him.
“Actually, not an extra little bit, a lot more out of him because he needs to impress the fans.
“He needs to show what he’s capable of doing because he didn’t do enough of that last season.”
Doherty played 29 times for Spurs during his first season in north London.
However, he started just 13 times in the Premier League.
