Dominik Szoboszlai silenced as Jeremie Frimpong out of his depth – Liverpool player ratings vs PSG

Dominik Szoboszlai endured a frustrating night at Anfield as Liverpool suffered a 2-0 defeat to PSG on Tuesday night.

The Reds entered the second leg of their Champions League quarter-final tie knowing that they needed to win by three clear goals to turn the tie on its head, but they could not save their season on home turf.

Arne Slot’s men laboured throughout the 90 minutes in front of a typically passionate home crowd, but they failed to put the visitors under enough pressure to truly reignite the tie, and were punished by Ousmane Dembele’s double.

The Merseysiders crashed out of the Champions League without the hearty fightback that many expected, with even their star midfielder struggling to make a telling impact on the game.

Liverpool’s attention now turns back to domestic matters, and with that in mind, Football Insider rates the performances of every single Reds player as their continental campaign drew to a close.

Dominik Szoboszlai found out vs PSG

Szoboszlai has been the shining light for Liverpool amid all of their struggles this season, and he has been the man to step up and provide for them on countless occasions.

The Hungarian has enjoyed an excellent campaign, so much so that talk of a move to Real Madrid has grown with every passing game of late.

However, that talk may now be about to fall silent after he struggled throughout against PSG, when his team neeed him most.

Szoboszlai was found out by the French giants, as he struggled to harm them in dangerous areas of the pitch, and even failed to provide his usual quality delivery.

He has become a player who is expected to dictate games on the very biggest stage, but that simply wasn’t the case in midweek.

His efforts this season cannot be sniffed at by any means, but he was found wanting on Tuesday, with little more than a 6/10 display.

Jeremie Frimpong still waiting for Liverpool breakthrough

Jeremie Frimpong has failed to get his Liverpool career going since his £30million move from Bayer Leverkusen last summer, and fans have grown increasingly frustrated with his recent performances.

The Dutchman has regularly been used by Slot in the right-back role, but he has been unable to provide the attacking spark from deep that the Reds thought they were getting when they bought him.

The 24-year-old often looks fragile defensively, and that was certainly the case on Tuesday night, when he found himself up against Dembele.

While Frimpong ultimately managed to keep the Frenchman off the scoresheet during the opening period, he was living dangerously with every attack from the visitors.

He is out of his depth as a right-back when it comes to the level on display in the latter stages of the Champions League, and it was no surprise that Slot lost patience and swapped him for Joe Gomez at half-time.

Frimpong is still waiting for his breakthrough moment at Liverpool, and his performance in midweek was worthy of little more than a 4/10 rating.
