Don Hutchison has leapt to the defence of Liverpool goalkeeper Loris Karius after his horror show against Bournemouth.

Karius, 23, conceded four goals on Sunday as Eddie Howe’s Cherries produced a superb comeback to win 4-3 despite being 3-1 down in the second half at the Vitality Stadium.

Hutchison, who played for Liverpool between 1990 and 1994, claimed on his personal Twitter account that Karius should be given time and compared him to Luis Suarez, David de Gea and Hugo Lloris.

Hutchison believes the summer signing should be given time at Anfield, after fans had criticised the German stopper for his part during Bournemouth’s last-gasp winner.

Nathan Ake pounced in the 93rd minute, as Karius spilled a long-range shot at the feet of the on-loan Chelsea defender.

Hutchison, 45, believes Liverpool’s expectant fanbase should give Karius time to adapt as they did with Suarez, who was a shadow of his current self at the beginning of his Anfield career.

Suarez scored just two goals in his first nine games, and just 11 league goals in his first full season at Liverpool.

Since his £4.7million move from Bundesliga side Mainz, Karius has kept four clean sheets in 10 league and cup appearances but has made a number of mistakes between the Liverpool sticks.

With Simon Mignolet currently looking for a way back into Jurgen Klopp’s starting XI, Karius will be hoping he can shake off his critics in the near future and retain the number one slot.
