Done deal: Aston Villa agree midfielder transfer

By Dominic Toner

Aston Villa midfielder Riccardo Calder has completed a loan move to Lincoln City, it was announced on Friday afternoon.

The Midlands club confirmed on their official Twitter account that the 21-year-old has moved to the non-league side until the end of the season.

He will hope to make an impact with National League side Lincoln, who are currently top of their division and on the brink of a promotion into the Football League.

Lincoln have a huge FA Cup quarter-final away to Arsenal on Saturday and are also welcoming a new player to their squad.

Calder has joined Lincoln on loan until the end of the season and is no stranger to spells away from Villa Park.

The versatile midfielder, who can also fill into the defence, spent the first half of the season on loan at League Two side Doncaster.

He made 20 appearances for Doncaster before being recalled to Villa in January and helped them to the top of League Two.

Football Insider verdict:

Calder has been an ever-present in Villa’s Under-23s side during 2017 and his versatility would surely be a great asset to have in the first-team. However, the 21-year-old is still plying his trade and has been unable to make his first senior appearance yet for the club. He will be joining a Lincoln side that look certain to achieve promotion this season and should be able to integrate well, having proved himself at a higher level in League Two this season. Steve Bruce will be keen to develop young talents from the academy and turn them into first-team regulars. The manager will mainly be focused on achieving promotion next season and spending money on proven players looks like being the most likely formula.
