Done deal: Dazzling playmaker agrees terms for Tottenham contract
By Danny Wright
Tottenham have confirmed that highly rated young playmaker Marcus Edwards has agreed terms to a new contract.
Spurs announced on their official Twitter account on Saturday afternoon that the 18-year-old has put pen-to-paper on a three-year deal which extends his stay in north London to 2020.
The attack-minded winger has been widely praised for his rare talent since progressing through the ranks of the Tottenham set-up.
Edwards earned his senior debut in Mauricio Pochettino’s squad last September when he came off the bench for the final 15 minutes of the 5-0 hammering of Gillingham in the EFL Cup.
He has failed to feature in the first-team since that clash at White Hart Lane, but his form in Premier League 2 for the Under-23 side last term shows that he could be on the fringe of Pochettino’s plans in the future.
Edwards scored five goals and supplied three assists in ten appearances in the development league last season, even though he missed a good chunk of the campaign through injury.
The London-born attacker’s form saw him called up to the England Under-19 squad that competed at the European Championships this summer.
He featured in all but one of the Young Lions’ matches as they went on to secure the title by beating Portugal 2-1 in the final earlier this month.
Football Insider Verdict
Tottenham are one of few top Premier League sides that take great pride in the players that their academy is producing, and by tying down Edwards for the next three-years highlights the faith that they have in their up-and-coming youngsters. Edwards only has 15 minutes of first-team football under his belt, but next season could see Mauricio Pochettino look to give him more experience in cup competitions. Spurs need to get a major piece of silverware next season, but in the early stages of the tournaments they could easily use Edwards in the place of someone like Christian Eriksen if the Dane is in need of a rest.
