The transfer from Elland Road to the John Smith’s Stadium comes weeks after it emerged that Mulhern had begun at trial at Leeds’ bitter rivals.
Leeds fans were shocked when Huddersfield revealed on their website last month that Mulhern had been included in their Under-23s side that beat Crewe Alexandra..
The Republic of Ireland Under-19 international ended his contract at Leeds with six months of his deal remaining in what remain unexplained circumstances.
Former Elland Road academy chief Paul Hart had spoken warmly of the young Irishman after he had signed a two-year professional contract in the summer of 2015.
Mulhern was a regular for the Leeds Under-23s team last season and then agreed a loan to non-league Southport earlier in this campaign.
But the young forward struggled to make an impact at the Merseyside outfit and returned to his parent club after making a single appearance.
Mulhern previously played for Huddersfield at youth level for almost four years before departing for Leeds in May 2009.
The youngster now has the opportunity to resurrect his career at a club who are battling Leeds for promotion to the Premier League.
Huddersfield are third in the Championship with 65 points, four ahead of fourth-placed Leeds, who have played one more match.
In other Leeds transfer news, the club are eyeing a stunning triple transfer swoop as three players headed into the training ground.
