Done deal: Wolves agree terms for another defender transfer
By Matt Bullin
Ipswich Town have completed the signing of Wolverhampton Wanderers’ Dominic Iorfa on a season-long loan, it has been confirmed.
The 22-year-old right-back joins Ipswich after he passed a medical at the club on Friday morning and he will link up with manager Mick McCarthy’s first team squad immediately ahead of the 2017-18 campaign.
The Championship club announced the news on their official website and on their official Twitter account on Friday afternoon.
Iorfa was a mainstay of Wolves’ back line last term, and he made 25 appearances across all competitions and his move to Ipswich was another defender transfer made by the Black Country club on Friday as Ethan Ebanks-Landell also joined MK Dons.
He broke into the first team at Molineux in the summer of 2013, and he has since played 93 league and cup games for the club.
Iorfa joined Wolves’ academy in the summer of 2010 from Southend, and he has previously spent time out on loan at Shrewsbury Town.
The 22-year-old is primarily a right-back, but he is also comfortable in the heart of defence, and was used there on several occasions last season.
Ipswich finished in 16th-place in the 2016-17 Championship, and McCarthy will hope the signing of Iorfa will help boost their chances of a play-off charge.
The right-back has been capped by England Under-21s on 13 occasions, and he featured once in the side’s 2017 European Under-21s Championships campaign.
Football Insider verdict
Iorfa marks a good signing for Ipswich given he was a mainstay of Wolves’ defence last term, but it is also an indication of the changes Nuno Espirto Santo is making to his squad. The 22-year-old was a regular in Wolves’ back line in the 2016-17 season, and he impressed many with his wholesome performances at right-back. However, if Nuno is willing to loan him out it could be a sign he does not trust the club’s youngsters, or that he has a replacement waiting in the wings. Either way the move is a good one for Iorfa, as he will likely get even more playing time at Ipswich – and the chance to further his own development.
In other Wolves news, Nuno is eyeing a move for this Leeds midfielder.
