Early Liverpool team news: Klopp axes mainstay from squad for clash v Arsenal - report

Jurgen Klopp has decided to completely axe Simon Mignolet from the matchday squad ahead of Liverpool’s clash with Arsenal on Sunday, according to a report.

The Liverpool Echo claims that Mignolet, 29, will take no part in the proceedings at Anfield with Loris Karius taking his spot in the starting line-up and Danny Ward set to start on the bench.

It is understood that Mignolet is fit and ready to face the Gunners, but Klopp had taken the decision to remove him from the side despite recently admitting that he is No 1 choice goalkeeper for the season.

“In this moment it is Simon one, Loris two and Wardy three. That is not a decision for the next 20 years,” said Klopp, as quoted by the Echo.

Mignolet has been a mainstay of the squad in 2017 and has started all of Liverpool’s opening four fixtures of the campaign, but has only kept one clean sheets and conceded six goals – three of which came in an opening day 3-3 draw with Watford in the Premier League.

Karius, 24, signed for the Reds last summer with a view to him displacing the Belgian international from Klopp’s starting line-up, but after a rough patch of form, he found himself axed from the squad and hasn’t played a Premier League fixture since last December.

Liverpool go into Sunday’s clash with Arsenal knowing that they got the better of the north London side on both occasions last season as they beat them to a spot in the Champions League.

In other Liverpool news, the Reds are shy of the valuation of this striker as talks rumble on.
