Early team news: 26-year-old to be recalled to Newcastle starting XI against Wigan - report
By Matt Farr
Striker Dwight Gayle is set to return to the starting eleven as Newcastle take on Wigan in the Championship on Saturday, according to a report.
The Chronicle claim that the 26-year-old is set to be reinstated by Newcastle boss Rafa Benitez, as he seeks to extend the club’s lead at the top of the table.
Gayle has been sparsely used by Newcastle in recent weeks, having struggled with a hamstring injury, but is expected to lead the line against Wigan after a much-needed rest in the international break.
This should be fantastic news for Newcastle, who will be welcoming back their top goalscorer at a vital time in their promotion campaign.
The English striker has scored 21 goals from 30 appearances in all competitions this season, earning himself a deserved nomination on the EFL’s three-man shortlist for the Player of the Season award.

Newcastle have just eight games remaining in their bid to secure immediate promotion back to the Premier League, and they currently sit one point clear at the top of the Championship.
Gayle has been an integral part of their successful promotion campaign to date, and Benitez will hope he can fire them closer to their goal in the coming weeks, despite finding the back of the net once since January.
