Eddie Gray: Two Leeds stars have proved doubters wrong ahead of Newcastle clash
By Will Butcher
Eddie Gray believes midfield duo Kalvin Phillips and Ronaldo Vieira were key to Leeds’ 3-0 win over Preston on Saturday.
Doubts had arisen over Garry Monk’s decision to leave Eunan O’Kane on the bench and opt to start youthful stars Phillips and Vieira, but both coped well despite a lack of experience.
Leeds legend Gray claimed they were integral in helping the Yorkshire giants “control the game” at Elland Road, as the Whites ran out comfortable winners.
“I thought the two young boys in the middle of the park did well,” Gray told LUTV, as quoted Leeds’ official Twitter account.
“There was a wee bit of concern, nothing against the boys, but with two young players in their together and how it would go. But they coped very well and gradually we took control of the game.”

Both Vieira and Phillips could now be given the nod on Friday evening as Leeds go up against Newcastle at St. James’ Park, as captain Liam Bridcutt remains doubtful to be fit in time.
Ex-Benfica youth player Vieira has been in exceptional form this season, with the 18-year-old’s finest moment coming against Norwich as his long-range strike flew in to earn all three points in a 3-2 win.
Phillips, 21, has also proved to be a useful member of the squad when called upon, but has seen his playing time become more intermittent than Vieira’s following two red cards this season.
The duo could combine once again as fans hope for another three points that could see Leeds climb to third in the table, if Huddersfield and Reading drop points.
In other Leeds news, Vieira posted this message on Instagram ahead of the game.
