Eddie Howe 'going berserk' behind the scenes after another Newcastle United injury blow - pundit

Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe will be “going berserk” with Alexander Isak set to miss “several weeks” of action after getting injured while on international duty.

That’s according to former Rangers and Scotland boss Alex McLeish, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the Magpies’ latest injury blow.

As reported by The Telegraph (26 September), club record signing Alexander Isak is set for “several weeks” on the sidelines after picking up a lower leg injury.

The 23-year-old returned to the club last weekend for treatment.

The forward joins Chris Wood, who picked up an injury on international for New Zealand on the Magpies’ injury list.

“Managers must be tearing their hair out,” McLeish told Football Insider’s Ben Wild.

“When their players go away on international duty they must be on tenterhooks the whole time, hoping their players come back fit and ready to go again.

“It’s not changed from the days I was in the national team. Players would pull out left, right and centre. You felt they were doing it to protect their club which is fine, I see that.

“You get to the stage now where players are overplayed so much, I feel that the bodies, somewhere along the line you are going to suffer a setback.

“Again, we have discussed this. Players, the demands put on them are more than when I was playing. We used to play one international game at a time.

“All these guys [managers] are going berserk.”

According to the Daily Mail (27 September), Callum Wilson is expected to be fit enough to start against Fulham on Saturday (1 October).

The 30-year-old has scored two goals in three games for the Magpies this season.
