Eddie Howe pushes for Newcastle to agree Kieran Trippier deal

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe wants Kieran Trippier to stay at the club and sign a new contract as he nears the end of his current deal this summer.

Trippier has been one of Howe‘s key men amid Newcastle‘s desire to compete with the world’s biggest clubs over the last few years.

He is nearing the end of his contract in June, but as I revealed on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Transfer Insider podcast, the Magpies boss wants him to stay on for next season.

35-year-old Trippier has been a regular for Newcastle in recent months due to Tino Livramento’s injury woes.

Livramento’s potential departure this summer could throw Newcastle’s transfer plans into disarray, and so keeping Trippier around is likely to appeal to Howe and the club’s chiefs even if they look to sign a new right-back.

Kieran Trippier is still wanted by Eddie Howe at Newcastle

Trippier has made over 150 appearances for Newcastle since joining the club from Atletico Madrid in January 2022.

He has already played one more game this season than he did in 2024-25, and looks set to be offered a new contract before his current one expires in the summer.

Speaking on the Transfer Insider podcast, I explained: “It’s a bit of a dilemma for Newcastle and Eddie Howe.

“I think Howe would love to keep Kieran Trippier. He’s been a key man. I think he was the first big signing after the Saudi Arabian takeover.

“He’s probably played more games than he expected to this season due to Tino Livramento’s injuries, but it’s not just on the pitch, it’s also off the pitch.

“He’s such an influential figure, and I think he still has a lot to offer, as I think he’s proven in recent weeks. He’s been one of Newcastle’s better performers.

“A lot will come down to what Newcastle offer Trippier. He’s 35 and turns 36 next September, once the season starts.

“I think if a deal can be offered that appeals to Trippier, whether that’s one year or maybe two years, there’s a willingness on all sides to try and get a deal done here.”

Man City plotting summer move for Livramento

Trippier’s future is likely to hinge on what happens with Livramento, who has suffered from injuries this season but is one of the Premier League’s best right-backs when fit.

The 23-year-old has consistently impressed under Howe over the last three seasons, and his strong showings have seen numerous top clubs register their interest in his services.

Sources have told Football Insider that Man City want to sign Livramento this summer to solve their own right-back concerns, as they do not employ a recognised senior player in that position as it stands.

Arsenal are also in the hunt to sign the England international, and his potential departure could well mean Trippier is more likely to stay at St James’ Park past this summer.
