Edens and Sawiris ready to pull the trigger as Aston Villa source shares Smith update - Whelan

Noel Whelan has claimed the Aston Villa owners will seriously consider sacking Dean Smith after Friday’s 1-0 defeat to Southampton.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted Wes Edens and Nassef Sawiris would be “twitchy” after the Villans’ dire run of form.

An Aston Villa source told Football Insider (4th November) Smith would be fighting for his job if they failed to pick up points against the Saints.

An early Adam Armstrong goal condemned the Villans to their fifth successive defeat.

Whelan insisted the ambitious Aston Villa board would be thinking about a change in the dugout.

Whelan told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “Five defeats is not great. We know that as managers, you’re there to be winning football matches.

“We know the money they’ve spent and it needs to turn around swiftly, very, very quickly.

“Getting beat, there is some real pressure on his shoulders. There will be thoughts that need to be running through the owners’ minds.

“It’s a difficult one, isn’t it, because you don’t want to see managers sacked.

“At the same time, with the money that they’ve spent, the squad that they’ve got and the fans who will be demanding wins from the players that they’ve got in their squad, they’ll be getting a little bit twitchy.

“They should be a lot further up believe with the squad that they’ve got. They must have thought, beginning of the season, they’re pushing for top six.

“I think that’s what everyone thought with what they’ve spent and the players they’ve brought in. Also, the players they already had from the year before.

“Yes, they’re without Grealish but is it proving that one player can make a difference?”

Smith’s men currently sit 15th in the table.

They could drop into the relegation zone if Watford and Leeds draw or win and Burnley beat Chelsea this weekend.
